Julius Caesar Movie Comparison

Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare is a classic piece of English literature that has helped define the progression of prose. It has been made into stage productions and movies time and time again. I recently watched the BBC Production of it and here is my comparison.

Julius Caesar is a play, that when I first read it, I had this vision of what it should look like when acted out on stage. Then, seeing it in a movie, it kind of changes how you view the characters. The movie though, was extremely true to the play. In fact, I think down to almost every exact line. And it would sometimes go through two or three monologues before they finally cut the scene. I also felt that the movie gave them all British accents when they were supposed to be Roman. That didn't really fit to me. And from a photographers eye, the cinematography was the worst I think that I have ever seen. There was no excitement. The camera was always eye level with the actors. I imagined Julius Caesar to be a very dark play and the BBC production did an alright job of that. Overall, when it comes to being true to the story, this production wins, but when it comes to being entertained by something other than stage actors on camera, then this isn't the movie for you.

Well said about JC being a "dark" play, and I agree: we get that from the BBC production. Do you think you would like to participate in a Shakespearian play? How would your rendition be different?
